Septic tank issues – Should you repair or replace?

If your property uses a septic tank you will probably know when something has gone wrong. Often it can be as simple as a strong, unpleasant odour in the area, but it could be as extreme as sewage backing up into the home.

Although septic tanks are relatively unsophisticated equipment, there are a number of things that can go wrong with them if they’re not properly maintained. Like anything, over time it may become necessary to completely replace your septic tank, but often it can be repaired fairly simply.

A broken pipe, for example, can be repaired without the need to replace the full system. However, if there is damage to the tank itself and sewage is leaking into the ground it may well need replacing entirely. Not only will it need replacing in order to work, it’s also essential to get it sorted ASAP as it’s a biohazard. If this is something you’re suffering with, make sure to keep your children and pets away from the area.

Of course, nobody wants to spend their hard earned money on a new septic tank, which is totally understandable. It’s possible that you might be able to claim for a new tank on your home insurance if you have the right kind of cover and pay a much smaller amount for excess.

Another consideration is that many repairs to septic tanks aren’t repairs at all. They’re often patch up jobs that will prolong the tanks life for a little bit longer before the problem often rears its smelly head again. Sometimes it can be more prudent to opt for a replacement rather than deal with the issue again months or years down the line. The cost of paying for repairs once or twice before finally replacing can far outweigh the cost of replacing just once.

Either way, if you are experiencing issues with your septic tank it’s absolutely essential to get it looked at as soon as possible. It may be a simple solution, but the alternative can be damage to the natural environment and potentially your own family. Regular maintenance can be a preventative measure that avoids such problems occurring.
