Top 5 things to consider when hiring a contractor

Hiring a quality contractor for your construction project is the key to gaining the best possible results. There are a lot of options out there so it can be difficult to choose the right team for the right job. Some contractors can be good but not right for a particular job and sadly others can gain a reputation for poor quality works.

Track record

A contractors reputation means everything and the best way to establish their quality is to research some of their past projects and seek advice from those who have used them before. If they have a good reputation then it shouldn’t be too hard to find feedback online and maybe some case studies from projects they have completed that might be similar to yours. At M J Davidson, for example, we keep some of our project case studies online alongside testimonials from past customers.

Budget

We must stress that everything should not be decided purely on cost, but it does need to be factored in. Some contractors will be more expensive than others, others will be really cheap. This can be completely indicative of the quality of work you receive. It’s not always best to choose the cheapest quote, but you don’t necessarily need the most expensive either. At M J Davidson, we pride ourselves on providing competitive quotes in return for high-quality work. We’re certainly not the most expensive, but we’re not always the cheapest either.

Timescale

A good contractor should be able to provide you with an accurate timescale for completing a project. If a firm is really busy it’s likely to be much later and result in them completing work in stages whilst working on other projects. If you have a strict time frame within which you need work to happen it’s important to assess whether the contractor you’re deciding on can deliver on this. Projects sometimes overrun with nobody at fault, but be wary of any firms who say they can do it much quicker than the others as it’s often unfeasible.

Project size

You need to choose the right size firm for the right size job. If the project is big and the company is fairly small, it’s probably not a great fit. Similarly, hiring a large contractor for a reasonably small job can be cost prohibitive as they’re likely to charge much higher rates than a smaller firm who are more than up to the task at hand. If you regularly need to hire a contractor, you might even keep a number of different sized firms in mind to match them to different projects depending on size.

Specialities

Most contractors will be able to provide a wide number of services and take on projects from start to finish. However, if the project you are working on is fairly specialist then it can be worth seeking out a contractor who has a lot of experience in that particular area. At M J Davidson we’re capable of providing a complete end to end solution for our clients, however, we also have a lot of specialist expertise in certain areas, such as formworks, excavations and even artificial sports pitch construction.

If you have a project and would like M J Davidson to provide a no obligation quote or advice, we would love to help. We pride ourselves on our honesty and will be able to tell you if we’re a good fit for your project from the outset.
